Squid Game
I've been seeing a lot of buzz about this Netflix show, "Squid Game," on every social media platform and on my Netflix suggestions. So, I started watching it while waiting in the dentist office and it's so good! So far, I have only watched 2 episodes, but at this rate, I'll finish the show by tonight. It seems like all of the people "drafted" or chosen to participate in these games have a lot of debt and owe a bunch of money to people. There's a huge cash prize for the winner, so of course this motivated them to join and play in order to win and pay off their debt and get people off their backs. The people there directing everything are masked up so you cannot see who they are. I have a feeling that they are politicians, police, and other community members. They played their first game, red light green light. "A kids game," they thought. The announcer spoke out the rules and said on green you go, and red you stop. If on red we detect movement, you're eliminated. The first round someone moved on red and got shot. Elimination = death. All of the other players caught on and started freaking out, moving around frantically. The guns were going off like crazy shooting everyone that moved. There was 456 people to start with, and when the game ended there was 201 left. Half of them wanted to leave and half wanted to stay. There was the last person, Player 1, an older man with onset dementia, who made the final decision to leave. They all went home, but now the invites are sent out again.
This is the last part I have seen so far. Right in the first episode, there's a moral dilemma. You need the prize money, which is life changing, but people are dying off as the games progress. The players now think to themselves, "Is it worth it?" Imagine the affect that's going to be on the survivors witnessing so many deaths. There's only one winner, so you're also risking your own life. Ethos kicks in with the masked people in charge, it's almost like "I have control so follow what I say." Already in just these first two episodes there's a lot of pathos. Seeing everyone living not the best life, and struggling for money is upsetting. There's all different types of people, young and old, women and men. After finishing my final documents for the film project, I also recognized and talked about ethos and pathos. It was mostly analyzing the effect and why the appeals were used. For this show, I think it's just added for entertainment purposes. There could possibly be a deeper message or meaning as it progresses, but I haven't made it that far.
Has anyone else watched this show? Tell me how you liked it!
